The survival of one-person firms illustrates the amazing strength these professionals had throughout the recession. Working as owner, supervisor, laborer all in one package one-person firms know better than anyone else what it takes to generate new business, keep customers happy and bring home a paycheck. The numbers tell the story. I suspect the reason there has not been much growth in this area, while everything else is on the rise, is because its awfully tough doing it all by yourself and few newcomers are able to jump into that kind of work situation. One additional positive aspect is how one-person firms have surpassed big production outfits in finding ways to become more efficient (no organization to resist change) so that today they get more done with much less wasted time. The bulk of our customers have been small builders. They are all being squeezed by a variety of issues but they demonstrate a resiliency and commitment unlike anything we see in the industry.
